School Vegetable Garden

St David’s PTA has a running project, the School Community Fruit and Vegetable Garden.  The project was originally designed and created by a parent (Vivienne Malyszko) and funded by the PTA and constructed by a large team of parents in March 2010.

The project aims to create a ‘Living Classroom’, which integrates the garden with the School kitchen and curriculum and is supported by a large number of committed parents and staff and by the enthusiasm, hard work and delight of the pupils.

Please follow our progress on our dedicated blog ‘Veggiemania’ and see further details of all the brilliant people who have given so generously of their time and resources to build our garden and sustain it at: http://stdavidsveg.wordpress.com

We aim for every child in the school to sow or plant vegetables in the course of the school year, by organising key gardening sessions for collaboration between staff and parents, where pupils can gain hands-on experience and knowledge of growing their own food.  Some may wish to join a regular gardening club run by staff and parents. Others may be involved formally as Environmental monitors, responsible for daily observation and monitoring of progress.

The garden produce will go to the school kitchen and whilst the garden cannot hope to produce in volume, it is hoped that the seasonal produce in the garden can inform the menu design for school lunches and inspire a Healthy Eating Policy.  We hope that parents will support this by ensuring that their children only bring fruit or plain biscuits for morning break. The project will also reach into the classrooms across the curriculum.
